Tom attended the dinner as Richmond Winner of the Green Guardian Awards in the Young Environmentalist category, and the additional accolade came as a complete, but very pleasant, surprise when he was presented with his award by environmental writer, Lucy Siegle. Tom is no stranger to glittering green prizes having already won a string of awards for his work, including, in 2008, Richmond in Bloom Young Gardener of the Year, the O2 It's Your Community Award and the Conservation Foundation’s Community Category, presented by David Bellamy in Covent Garden. His environmental achievements to date include helping to design, create and maintain a community planted garden and wildlife area in the road in which he lives, adopting seven Council owned trees, helping dig out over 6 tonnes of rubble in order to create additional allotment areas, growing his own fruit and vegetables and becoming a beekeeper. With the expansion of the Conservation Area at Ditton Field, and the long-awaited introduction of bee-hives there, Tom can expect to be kept busy here at KGS as well as at home in Richmond, and there is no reason why he shouldn’t soon be adding to his already impressive crop of awards. |
